A BROAD AND DIVERSE COLLECTION OF EVIDENCE FOR CHRISTIANITY, AND AGAINST ATHEISM
By Steven H Propp
Norman Geisler is a famed apologist and theologian, who has written/cowritten many other books such as When Skeptics Ask, When Critics Ask: A Popular Handbook on Bible Difficulties, Philosophy of Religion, Christian Apologetics, Introduction to Philosophy, Systematic Theology, etc. Frank Turek has also written Correct, Not Politically Correct; How Same-Sex Marriage Hurts Everyone.
They wrote in the Introduction to this 2004 book, "We hope the evidence we present in this book will, in some small way, woo you to God. Keep in mind that it's not our evidence, it's HIS. We are simply compiling it in a logical order. By using real-world stories and illustrations as often as possible, we intend to make this book readable and its reasoning easily accessible." (Pg. 31)
They state, "The atheists/Darwinists/materialists believe, BY FAITH, that our minds arose from mindless matter without intelligent intervention. We say it is by faith because it contradicts all scientific observation, which demonstrates that an effect cannot be greater than its cause. You can't give what you haven't got, yet materialists believe that dead, unintelligent matter has produced intelligent life. This is like believing that the Library of Congress resulted from an explosion in a printing shop! It makes much more sense to believe that the human mind is made in the image of the Great Mind---God.... our minds can apprehend truth and can reason about reality because they were built by the Architect of truth, reality, and reason itself. Materialism cannot explain reason any more than it can explain life." (Pg. 130)
They are somewhat "cagey" about the age of the universe: "Since there are several views on this topic, especially within Christian circles, we do not have space to treat them all here... the more important point is not WHEN the universe was created but THAT it was created." (Pg. 165) [However, in Systematic Theology, Vol. 2, God/Creation, Geisler states, "it seems plausible that the universe is billions of years old. And... there is nothing in Scripture that contradicts this." (Pg. 650)]
They state, "So why don't we see biblical miracles today? Because if the Bible is true and complete, God is not confirming any new revelation and thus does not have this main purpose for performing miracles today... We are not saying that God cannot do miracles today, or that he never does... It's just that he may not have a reason to publicly display his power the way he did during biblical times because all of the truths he wanted to reveal have already been revealed and confirmed... Biblical miracles were special acts of God that laid the foundation for his permanent revelation to mankind." (Pg. 216)
They argue, "the New Testament documents contain several lines of independent eyewitness testimony. How do we know...? Because 1) each major author includes early and unique material that only eyewitnesses would know, and 2) their accounts describe the same basic events but include divergent details... if the accounts were all from one source or a single editor, there would be harmonization, not divergence of details. When early accounts tell the same basic story but include divergent details, historians rightly conclude they have independent eyewitness accounts of actual historical events." (Pg. 272)
About differences between the gospel accounts, they assert, "First, let's point out that the angel accounts [in the resurrection narratives] are not contradictory. Matthew does not say that there was ONLY one angel at the tomb... But why did Matthew mention only one angel if two angels were really there? For the same reason two different newspaper reporters covering the same event choose to include different details in their stories... Maybe Matthew mentioned only the angel that spoke (Matt 28:5) while John described how many angels Mary saw (John 20:12). Or maybe one angel was more prominent than the other. We don't know for sure. We just know that such differences are common among eyewitnesses. In light of the numerous divergent details in the New Testament, it's clear that the New Testament writers didn't get together to smooth out their testimonies." (Pg. 284-285)
About the objection, "What does martyrdom prove? Does it prove Islam is true too?" they observe, "there's one crucial difference between the New Testament martyrs and those of today... the New Testament Christian martyrs had more than sincerity---they had evidence that the Resurrection was true. Why? Because the New Testament martyrs were eyewitnesses of the resurrected Christ... This is unlike anything from Islam (or any other martyr-producing belief system)." (Pg. 294)
About the objection, "aren't you arguing in a circle... by using the Bible to prove the Bible?" they note, "we're not arguing in a circle, because we're not starting with the assumption that the Bible is an inspired book. We're starting with separate documents that have proved beyond a reasonable doubt to be historically reliable. Since those documents reveal that Jesus is God, then we know that his teaching on the Old Testament must be true." (Pg. 372)
On the problem of evil, they say, "The Bible traces it all back to the fall of man. No one is really innocent because we all sinned in Adam (Rom 5:12) and as a consequence deserve death (Rom 6:23). Natural disasters and premature death are a direct result of the curse on creation because of the fall of humankind (Genesis 3; Romans 8). This fallen world will not be righted until Christ returns (Revelation 21-22). So no one is guaranteed a trouble-free life, or a full life of seventy years... Just because God hasn't ended evil YET doesn't mean that he never will end it." (Pg. 390)
This is one of the most detailed, and philosophically-sophisticated Christian apologetics books currently available, and will be "must reading" for any students of apologetics.

It is easy to read and very enlightening
By Carole S. Denner
This is well written for the average person, not the academic. It is easy to read and very enlightening. It is well documented, with extensive end notes and both general and scripture indices.
